Director of U.S. Accounting

This is a senior leadership position within the U.S. finance department. It will lead and be responsible for the Global Consolidation, reporting on the parent company financial statements, the U.S. Accounting Department, U.S. and Canadian Payroll and day-to-day operational finance matters that require a senior leader. The role requires deep US GAAP expertise and is responsible for directing all phases of accounting and payroll while ensuring compliance with external requirements as well as internal controls. The role will manage external relationships such as financial statement auditors, benefit plan auditors and other third-party vendors.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
- A senior member of the Finance Department and an ambassador for Sage’s values, actively supporting the department’s DEI Goals, and contribute enthusiastically to our culture of openness, transparency, and accountability.
- Responsible for leading the U.S. accounting department, U.S. and Canadian payroll and the Global Consolidation.
- Primary oversight of the parent company financial statement audit, which is of great importance to the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors.
- In collaboration with the VP Global Finance, shape the strategic direction of the Finance department across its responsibility for accounting closing and reporting, acquisition accounting, internal controls and be accountable for translating that strategy into specific actionable plans.
- Takes the leading role in focusing the U.S. Finance Department on aligning their activity with the direction and strategy of the Global Finance Department. Be a role model within the department for excellent people management and leadership, ensuring your teams are having the necessary development and feedback conversations, receiving suitable coaching and training. Focus on mapping out career pathways for the department and ensuring that progression opportunities within the department are identified and communicated.
- As a senior member of the Global Finance team, proactively lead our multi-year Finance Strategy projects and ensure any issues that emerge are dealt with in a timely manner. This includes using Improvement principles to drive productivity and efficiency at Sage. Within your area of responsibility, lead the organizational change management necessary to support the successful introduction of the new processes and new systems that support this initiative.
- Solve and solution complex payroll matters and operational finance issues facing the business by leveraging a strong business acumen and a pragmatic approach.
- Primary oversight of the 401(k) financial statement audit and filing of the Form 5500.
- Streamline financial processes, enhance efficiency, and support Sage’s changing business needs. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive alignment and integration of finance initiatives within the wider organization. Act as a point of escalation for complex or ambiguous issue resolution.
- Lead the review and strengthening of financial reporting and control processes across the department. Ensure processes are delivered consistently, efficiently and in line with Sage policies and best practices, including a thorough review of all balance sheet reconciliations.
- Hold responsibility for the Finance Department budget ensuring accurate plans and forecasts are submitted and all material variances to plan are fully investigated.
- Use financial acumen to develop the skills within U.S. Accounting to develop their knowledge. Provide guidance and training to finance and accounting teams to promote adherence to control standards and best practices.
- Assist the VP Global Finance with the assessment and financial due diligence of business acquisitions.
Qualifications, Experience & Education:
- Minimum of 10+ years leading a finance function with complex international operations.
- BA or BS, in accounting or finance, desired, graduate degree in accounting a plus; or equivalent and relevant experience.
- Active California Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification in good standing.
- Expert knowledge of U.S. GAAP and internal controls over financial reporting.
- Express accounting concepts clearly both orally and in writing in a way which can be understood by both specialists and non-specialists.
- Substantial experience of leading at a senior level, ideally with remote management experience.
